With top three-row SUVs making a resurgence in Washington, Canonsburg, Bethel Park, and Pittsburgh--not only creeping back onto the scene thanks to low gas prices, but subtly growing bigger and more powerful--nobody was surprised when Subaru announced they were joining the party.
We were even less surprised to learn that it would not be a re-vamped version of the Tribeca, which--while being charming and capable--never really struck the same chords as other long-time Subaru favorites.
The new Subaru Ascent SUV likely won't have that issue.
Spoiler alert: since this model is still a concept, we are currently lacking a lot of the information and specs that we'll know once the actual production model is released.
Hopefully, though, we'll be able to re-post this Ascent Frequently-Asked Questions List later this year or early next year, with answers to all of them.
Questions About the 2019 Subaru Ascent
When will the Subaru Ascent go on sale? Media suggests that the Ascent will go on sale in 2018 as a 2019 MY.
What's the price for the Ascent? No idea--but we can only assume that it will be the most expensive model in the Subaru lineup because of its size.
Will it get good gas mileage? Subaru's entire lineup is doing well in terms of fuel economy, so we can guess that the Ascent will definitely be competitive in terms of efficiency. With the new global platform and a turbocharged engine, we could easily see over 25 mpg on the highway, though we won't know for sure for a while.
Does it have regular doors, or sliding doors like a minivan? The Subaru Ascent concept currently offers normal SUV doors, and we imagine the production model will look very similar.
How much cargo space behind the third-row seat? With all seats folded? No interior specs have been released for the Subaru Ascent yet, but we know that it's taller, wider, longer, and bigger all over than any other Subaru, meaning that it will offer a lot more than the 35/75 cubic feet of rear/total storage space in other Subaru SUVs.
What engines will power the Subaru Ascent? Currently the 2019 Ascent will offer a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder BOXER engine, likely paired to Subaru's CVT (no power specs yet); but we have to wonder if the production model will also offer an available six-cylinder engine, like the Outback and Legacy do.
What's the towing capacity of the Subaru Ascent? This one we can't answer just yet, but it will likely be a good few hundred pounds more than the Outback or Forester.
